Branding: Behind the Scenes of Mom Photographer – Jessie Martin

Branding

Read about the branding design process behind mom photographer Jessie Martin. You'll learn about how she developed her brand and how she was able to grow her business.

I had such a good time working with and getting to know Jessie. Her values in life and business are ones you’ll want to hear. From her philosophies in minimalism both as a style and as a business model are the opposite of the hustle movement.

The results of this brand design were elements that made you feel calm and comfortable. The visuals were classic and simple, which I tell people all the time, are often times way more difficult to design than something that is busy.

Here is a little preview. You can see more photos of this brand here.

When we finished with the branding, I interviewed Jessie on the whole experience. She’ll give you some amazing advice on her business journey.

Tell us about how you got into this business.

I got my camera when my husband and I decided to start trying for a baby. After a lot of infertility issues and a loss, we were blessed with our son. I fell in love with taking pictures of him, and now our daughter. I love photography and the way it encourages me to slow down and see the magic in our every day. I kind of stumbled into my business after I posted a simple photography tutorial on my instagram stories. Moms started sharing my IG account with their friends, who shared it with their friends. I started gaining a following and realized very quickly that moms really want to learn how to take beautiful photos of their families. They want to know how to document their memories and tell their families’ stories. I created an online photography course just for moms and my business has been growing from there!

What is your brand all about?

I’m passionate about empowering moms to see how incredible their everyday motherhood journey is.

One way I do this is through teaching moms photography. My heart is for them to have beautiful images of their families to look back on so they can step into those moments over and over again & someday show their kids the story of their childhood.

I hope I can help them take better pictures, but most importantly, I want to help fellow moms see that there is so much glory in the mundane. My hope is for them to see the beauty in their everyday and to live with intention and purpose.

Before working on your brand identity, what did you think it was going to be like?

I wasn’t really sure. I don’t have an eye for design whatsoever, so I was really struggling with where to go with my branding. I knew I wanted some darker colors with white space. And I knew I didn’t want anything too whimsical, but also not too serious. I was definitely at a loss for where to go with everything.

After going through the brand process, what did you learn?

I learned so much during my time of working with Franzine, not only about my own brand, but about branding in general. I learned about the importance of being consistent in my branding and also about bringing my personality into my brand. It has been so helpful to have brand guidelines for me to work with. I also learned a lot about the importance of colors and color theory.

How do your design and visuals reflect your brand?

My brand is geared towards moms. It’s really important to me that my brand makes them feel welcome and “at home.” I wanted my website to feel a little like I was opening up my home to them and inviting them in for coffee. My hope was for the design and visuals to reflect my brand’s minimal and intentional mission.

How important was branding for your business and your audience?

Branding is so important to my business. My audience is made up of busy moms, so I only have a few seconds at best to make a good first impression. Having beautiful and consistent branding and design is so important in making that first impression and conveying my message and personality quickly.

If someone wanted to do what you were doing, what advice would you give them?

For someone who wants to start an online business I would definitely encourage them to narrow down their niche and their ideal customer. Narrowing those things down gives you so much freedom within your business. It’s kind of the same idea as brand guidelines – having the guidelines in place gives you a clear path and you know how to move forward with everything else.

What was one key thing that helped you get to where you are today?

I think listening to podcasts has been one of the best resources I’ve used to grow my business. There is so much free education out there and as a busy mom, podcasts have been perfect for me to learn, “On the go.”

Can you give some words of wisdom to someone just starting out but feeling lost or discouraged?

As I’ve been on the entrepreneurial journey over the last year, I think the biggest thing I’ve learned is that any business needs to be approached with humility and a servant’s heart. That might sound funny, but the more you are willing to serve your audience or your customer, and the more authentic and humble you can be, the more your business will naturally grow and flourish. Try not to look around you or compare yourself to anyone else. We’re all at different stages and we all have different strengths. Keep working hard and come to your business and your customers with a heart to serve.

If someone wanted to work with you, what can they do?

If you’re interested in learning more about photography – specifically how to take pictures of your kids and family – I have a ton of free resources over on my website! I have a free guide just for moms and I also share a ton of free tutorials and tips on my IG every week. If you’re wanting to take the next step and dig a little deeper, I have several online photo courses just for moms as well. I also have an online shop where I sell editing presets that can make editing photos much easier and simpler.
